strives to create comfortable, natural-looking prosthetics for patients in Elkhart, IN
Well-fitted, life-like dentures can help patients take confidence in their smile once more.
In order to meet the diverse needs of our patients, we offer both traditional and implant-supported dentures. During your initial consultation with Dr. Watkins, he will conduct a thorough evaluation of your smile and ask about your dental needs, goals, and budget. Based on this discussion, he can recommend which type of denture is best suited to you.
Because traditional dentures do not involve surgery, they are typically the more affordable option. Made up of artificial teeth anchored into a gum-colored base, this prosthetic fits directly over the gums and is held in place by suction, clasps, or dental adhesives. While full dentures can replace an entire arch of teeth, a partial denture is often recommended as an alternative to a dental bridge.
For the most stable prosthesis available, patients can take advantage of dentures supported by dental implants
. These small titanium posts are surgically placed
into the jaw, where they fuse with the surrounding bone and function as artificial tooth roots.
This not only provides your denture with stable anchors, but can also halt and even reverse jawbone recession. However, dental implants are not appropriate for everyone. If you do not have enough healthy bone tissue, your jaw may not be able to support implants. During consultations, Dr. Watkins will often use our in-office cone beam computerized tomography scanner to analyze your jaw and determine your candidacy.
Fabricating Your Custom Denture
While the precise timeline depends on your particular health needs, creating traditional dentures is typically a two to three-stage process. If you suffer from gum disease or tooth decay, the first stage of treatment focuses on preliminary procedures, such as periodontal therapy and tooth extractions
. These lay the foundation for healthy smile and can ensure that your results are not undermined by underlying conditions.
If you do not need any other treatment, Dr. Watkins can immediately proceed to the second stage: taking impressions. We can create a mock-up of your smile that you can use to tailor the fit of your dentures before we send them to a trusted off-site lab for fabrication. Because this can take two to three weeks, patients will need to return to the office to receive their prosthetic during the third and final stage of treatment.
Dr. Watkins and his team are dedicated to providing you with a customized, comfortable denture to restore multiple missing teeth.
If you opt for implant-supported dentures over the traditional option, Dr. Watkins may split treatment into even more stages. Patients must schedule separate appointments for preparatory procedures, implant placement, and restoration. In this case, preparatory procedures may include bone grafts as well as periodontal therapy and other services.
